"These experiments help us address questions about the potential role that anxiety might play in human alcoholism", he said.Rats' anxiety levels were measured with a piece of apparatus consisting of two open arms and two closed arms connected to a central platform.Rats who spend more time in the closed arms were judged to be more anxious.The researchers showed that chemically stimulating creb activity in the parts of the brain associated with anxiety could decrease the anxiety and alcohol intake in p rats.And chemically blocking creb prompted np rats to display anxious behaviour and turn to alcohol.Lead researcher subhash pandey said that the p rats appear to selfmedicate with alcohol to alleviate anxiety, a behaviour often seen in humans.The research suggests a deficit of the creb brain protein in people who are genetically predisposed to anxiety and alcohol drinking behaviours, he said.
